Asterisk infrastructure rebuild
Rebuilt the whole company's telephony with 6 hours of downtime, starting from close to zero telephony knowledge.
What it was
With little to no knowledge of telephony infrastructure, I was asked to rebuild the Asterisk infrastructure for the entire company, with a window of around 8 hours of downtime.
What I did
We finished in 6 hours, having:
- created the Asterisk server
- configured the E1 line
- updated and migrated the Jabber service in use at the time
- configured every extension via UDP deploy
Challenges
Needless to say this was a challenging task, but with the right people to ask and the right team to support the more repetitive parts, it turned into a successful piece of work — the kind worth telling at a bar.
Outcome
Solved for good. Whatever had prompted the rebuild never happened again.
The switchover landed inside the agreed window — 6 hours out of 8 — and the company’s telephony stayed stable from then on, with no recurrence.
